A home checklist to fight the flu

If you get sick during this flu season, it's very important that you stay home, get lots of rest and drink plenty of liquids. In fact, you shouldn't leave your home at all, except to receive necessary medical care.

That's why it's so important to be prepared ahead of time when it comes to the flu. Make sure your home is stocked with the following items in case you get sick and are unable to get to the store.

Supplies:

  • Soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Tissues
  • Thermometer
  • Medicines for fever, including Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen and Naproxen. (Do not give aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) to children or teenagers who have the flu; this can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye's syndrome. Check ingredient labels on over-the-counter cold and flu medications to see if they contain aspirin).
  • Multivitamins
  • Disinfectant wipes

Foods:

  • Bottled water and clear liquids, such as broth, sports drinks and electrolyte beverages for infants
  • Canned meats, vegetables and soups
  • Peanut butter and nuts
  • Dried fruit
  • Crackers
  • Protein or fruit bars
  • Cereal
