The identity security platform trusts Sparrow with end-to-end employee leave management.

1Password is transforming identity security for operations, AI agents, and individuals alike. With over a dozen tailored security solutions, 1Password gives people a safe, centralized platform to manage passwords, digital credentials, and private information.

The company’s enterprise vault protects more than 1.5 billion credentials and secrets, and is trusted by more than one million developers and over 180,000 businesses, including tech industry leaders like Salesforce and GitHub.

Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, 1Password has 1,200 talented employees scattered across Canada and the United States. Along with paying 100% of employee health insurance premiums, the company provides excellent parental leave: up to 24 weeks for birthing parents and 16 weeks for non-birthing parents.

“A big part of our employee well-being philosophy is making people feel comfortable in the workplace, and taking care of their needs outside of work as well,” said Jack O’Shea, Benefits Specialist at 1Password.

To carry out their generous leave policy, 1Password needed an efficient, full-service leave management system—so they turned to Sparrow.

The Sparrow experience: Minimal touch leave management

Partnering with Sparrow gives 1Password the freedom to be completely hands-off with employee leave management. When an employee requests leave, O’Shea inputs their information into the Sparrow dashboard, then Sparrow takes over, handling admin and coordinating with employees to file state paperwork.

“It’s a huge relief that we don’t have to worry about getting people’s paperwork in, or making sure they’re aware of the benefits available to them,” O’Shea explained.

Sparrow Leave Specialists set up individual intake calls with 1Password employees going on leave; during those chats, they review employees’ options, prep them on what to expect, and answer questions about the leave process and pay distribution.

From there, Sparrow creates a custom leave plan for each employee, and completes and submits state benefits paperwork on their behalf. Sparrow Leave Specialists also reach out to insurance providers and state agency representatives to gather extra leave documents or follow up on benefits applications.

“The leave process is confusing, and there are a lot of hoops to jump through for certain states,” O’Shea said. “Having a partner who can handle those challenges so we can focus on what’s going on inside the organization is very helpful.”

“Having a service that guarantees our compliance is a huge relief. It makes our jobs a lot easier, and gives us one less thing to worry about.”

The Sparrow team is well-versed in leave legislation across North America, and stays up to date on changes to ensure 1Password remains compliant and employees get the state benefits they’re entitled to.

“Having a service that guarantees our compliance is a huge relief. It makes our jobs a lot easier, and gives us one less thing to worry about,” explained O’Shea.

Meanwhile, he and his team get automatic email updates and notifications on the Sparrow dashboard, so they’re always up to speed. At any time, administrators and managers can log onto the dashboard to see an overview of company-wide leaves, a visual layout of any individual leave plan, or a breakdown of each person’s pay.

“We regularly utilize Sparrow’s payroll tracker to check incoming payments. That feature makes it easier to see how much people have been paid by the state or by our STD and LTD providers, so we know exactly what we need to pay to top them up to 100%.”

The result: More time for other critical initiatives

The best part about working with Sparrow, according to O’Shea, is the seamlessness. “The administrative lift makes my day-to-day work much easier,” he explained, “and I love the peace of mind knowing that leaves are moving along with minimal touch from my team.”

With leave admin taking up such little time and brainspace, 1Password’s benefits team has more capacity to refine internal processes, improve workplace wellness strategies, prepare for busy seasons, and hit new growth targets.

One of the latest developments is 1Password’s acquisition of Apono, a leader in just-in-time access governance for people, AI agents, and machines. “It’s a growing business need, and we’re excited to advance our company’s capabilities,” O’Shea said.
